Professor Qin Hongwu from QFNU was invited to our “Expert Lecture”

On the afternoon of November 14, 2023, Professor Qin Hongwu, a professor at the School of Foreign Languages at Qufu Normal University, the chief expert of the key discipline "Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics" in Shandong Province, and the leading figure in the research direction of "Corpus Linguistics and Translation Studies" in the key discipline strengthening project in Shandong Province, was invited to our school's “Expert Lecture”. Joined by faculty and students online, Professor Qin delivered a lecture titled Data, Corpus, and Foreign Language Teaching and Research, which was moderated by Vice Dean Su Rui from the School of Foreign Languages. Over 100 faculty and students from our university attended the lecture.

Professor Qin firstly discussed the relationship between data, information, and corpus, and explored the role of data in the era of generative artificial intelligence. He then summarized the significant impact of corpus linguistics in the digital and informational age on the development of foreign language disciplines, and discussed the vast expansion space brought by the diverse applications of data for qualitative and quantitative research in foreign language disciplines. Finally, he talked about the significant impact of large language models on foreign language teaching and research, both already realized and potentially realized. Professor Qin believes that efficient use of textual data and multimodal data in cross-cultural communication and dissemination research is a core skill for foreign language scholars. He encourages embracing generative artificial intelligence, strengthening data application capabilities with the help of multilingual large language models, and enhancing learning quality and research levels with dual intelligence support from humans and artificial intelligence.

Online, Professor Qin engaged in discussions and exchanges with faculty and students on topics related to data, information, corpus, foreign language teaching, and research. This lecture enhanced the interest of faculty and students in data, information, and foreign language research, and broadened their thinking in foreign language teaching and research.
